Crane Maiden

8ft x 4ft x 8 inches. Mixed media.

Tapestry piece is of the Japanese fable of the Crane Maiden. It is in reference to a Japanese tale of a mysterious maiden who is actually a crane. At night, hidden behind her soji screen door, she weaves beautiful kimono silks as payment for her room and board to a kind old man and woman who have promised not to watch her as she weaves. One day their curiosity get the better of them and they peak behind the door and see the crane at the loom weaving her own feathers into to the silk. Upon being discovered, the maiden/crane sadly leaves them, but returns every winter as a crane to graze in their fields.
