The Frame

The kimono frames were constructed of twisted red enameled wire. The basic frames were built upon large sheets of cardboard and then transferred to a wooden stand for the fabric sewing. A stiff cotton netting was hand stitched to the wire spanning the areas that later would be covered in silk fabric. The kimonos split into halves for easier transport. This transport consideration was necessary as the sculptures were to be driven to a fire retardant specialist to be sprayed prior to completion and prior to installation.

Filling in

Silk fabric was hand stitched around the netting and wire. Secondary layers of wire were then created to add depth and detail textures. Sheer silk fabric was hand stitched to these foreground layers. The hospital required that Feng Shui color schemes be taken into consideration. This determined the color sequencing of the kimonos on the wall and the basic hues of each kimono.
