Families joined me and to make mempo masks from paper and recycled materials (straws, manga and produce netting):

We made fearsome Mempo Samurai masks! These masks are created to protect the wearer and to intimidate the enemy. Mempo or menpo (“face and cheek”) armor masks are traditionally made of leather or metal and sometimes have lacquered finishes.

It could get very hot inside the samurai's armor so these masks are designed with sweat draining tubes. It must have been a terrifying sight to see a samurai dressed for battle with sweat streaming from his mask! Add mustache, decorations and sweat drains to your own samurai mask. You can even add a dripping bead of sweat (plastic pearl on fishing line).
